    Washed Up Before We Were Has Beens

    Who says you need an extravagant budget and fancy red carpet to have a successful premiere for a wake video these days? The guys at Obscura don’t, and their launch of the team video titled “Washed Up Before We Were Has Beens” went off last night in downtown Orlando. Friends, family, uber-pros, minor league pros, media, complete randoms, and even James “Bubba” Stewart all packed into the theater space to check out wakeskating action from the likes of semi-washed up veterans Danny Hampson and Aaron Reed, to not-very-washed-up young guns Grant Roberts and Travis Doran, plus a whole list of other shredders. The vibe was poppin’, drinks were flowin’, and everybody (plus the few mothers in attendance) had a great time. The video was filmed and edited entirely by Danny and Aaron, with the help of some friends along the way, but the quality of the final product did not come off nearly as “homemade” as other videos of years past. It was apparent Danny, Aaron and crew spent many long, hard hours over the last couple years making sure everything in the video was just as they wanted it. Judging by the reaction of the crowd throughout the premiere, they definitely did it right. The video was full of great shots, awesome music, insanely unique locations and winch spots, and of course, some of the most legit wakeskating the industry has to offer. Congrats to Aaron, Danny and the rest of the Obscura crew on a job well done. Be sure to look for a copy of “Washed Up Before We Were Has Beens” soon — if you’re a wakeskater or even just a fan of wakeskating, this is a video you won’t want to miss out on. Don’t let the title (or this article) fool you, all of these guys are far from washed up. This video easily proves that and will actually leave you wanting for more.

    Recent news in the arena of extreme sports ˆ The Billabong Azores Islands Pro surf competition took place in conditions of 2-3 feet.
    Fitzgibbons ranked highest with the highest score of 8.5. The ride started out fairly calm until conditions became fierce and the competition was halted for 6 hours until the tide went out.
    Competitors were forced to up their game contending with strong waves and skilled peers.
    In other news, Red Bull is teaming up with 5 of the top motocross stars and are designing a brand new track for the 1st Red Bull Metalliccross. The design showcases parts of Endurocross, Supercross, motocross, freestyle and trials. Expect some wild crazy aspects thrown together giving the competitor a navigational challenge. The bespoke track has a 12 foot high step up, creek crossings, explosions, stretches of sand and flame geysers to contend with. This event created by Red Bull Metallicross is available to both pros and amateurs and racers are encouraged to qualify.
    Over in the UK, Burton has joined with famous British fashion designer Paul Smith to create the 2011 Burton Vapor snowboard. Burton and Smith have previously collaborated on an apparel line in 2007 showcasing high fashion edgy looks specifically for Snowboarding.
    In US action, the second annual Converse Coastal Carnage has been hitting it hard at Huntington Beach, Calif. With $75,000 dollars up for grabs. 30 of the world`s top skaters fought it out to come out on top. 1st prize went to Ben Hatchell who walked away with $15,000.
    Coastal Carnage is the biggest action sports festival in the US. Half a million people attended the week`s events.

    Tennessee Wakeboarder Makes a Splash in Knoxville Knoxville, Tenn. — The top professional wakeboarders on the planet hit the waters of Volunteer Landing today for the opening rounds of the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour stop in downtown Knoxville. The event, which concludes tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 14, opened with preliminary rounds for the Pro Men, Pro Women and Jr. Pro Men’s divisions. Among the 34 riders who competed in the Pro Men’s division qualifiers today was Tennessee native Phillip Aslinger. Aslinger, a 20-year-old rookie from Chattanooga, placed second in his heat, behind Rusty Malinoski, to advance onto tomorrow’s quarterfinals. “I had a fall in my run, but other than that, I thought I rode really well,” said Aslinger. “Rusty [Malinoski] killed it today and won the heat, but I’m still pretty happy to make it to the quarterfinals.” Aslinger and Malinoski will be joined by 18 other pros in tomorrow’s quarterfinals, as all 20 riders will try to battle their way to the finals and emerge as the winner in Knoxville. “My rookie season has been a lot of fun, but I’m still looking for my first win,” said Aslinger. “My family and friends are coming out tomorrow, so it would awesome to get my first win in front of them.” Aslinger will hit the water at 11 a.m. for the Pro Men’s quarterfinals. Fellow Tennessean, Corrie Dyer, hit the water today to compete in the Pro Women’s division semifinals. Dyer, 20, out of Crossville, placed fourth in her six-woman heat, falling just short of advancement. “I didn’t do as well as I could have,” said Dyer. “I’m a little bummed that I didn’t make finals, but I still had a lot of fun today.” Emily Copeland Durham, Raimi Merritt and Amber Wing took the top three spots, respectively, in Dyer’s heat to advance onto tomorrow’s finals. Joining the trio in the six-man final is Nicola Butler, Shawna Hoffman and Anna Hajek, who also advanced past the semifinals. In the Jr. Pro Men’s division, the top amateur rippers on Tour hit the water for their quarterfinal round of action. Riders competed in five heats, with only the top two athletes from each group advancing to set up tomorrow’s 10-man semifinal. Among the 10 semifinalists is Florida native Daniel Powers. Powers won his quarterfinal heat today with a perfect score of 100 points. The MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour wraps up in Knoxville tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 14, with the ticketed event starting at 11 a.m., with the Main Event running from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets to Saturday’s event can be purchased at the gate for $10 (general admission), $5 (ages 6-12) or free (ages 5 and under).     Every time I go to Warped Tour I tell myself the same thing at the end of the day; “this will be my last Warped Tour”. The kids always seem to get younger and I always seem to get older. But this year was different (Not the part about me getting older and the kids getting younger. That still happened). I couldn’t be more happy about this years San Diego stop of the Vans Warped Tour. The bands were insane and the crowds were amazing. Where else can you go for a day to see all your favorite punk and rock bands? Practically nowhere. The Vans Warped Tour brings bands and their fans closer together for a true rock n’ roll show that you will never forget. Big thanks the Vans and Warner Bros. Records for helping set up an amazing day of shenanigans. And bravo to Pierce the Veil, You Me At Six, and my favorite band of the day In Fear and Faith for putting on unforgettable shows.     Thanks to Amber Wing we’ve seen women’s wakeboarding excel to an entirely new level this year. Amber has been knocking down 7’s, pete rose’s, and now 900’s off the wake and may we mention that she makes all of it look smooth and stylish as well?     When was the last time: You let your hair down and danced the night away: Wakestock UK start of July, really fun DJ’s and music at that event. You beat a male in a wakeboard contest? Australian Pro Tour when there was no Womens division, i think 2005. Got a box of free stuff? The 14th of July from Oakley right before I landed my first 900!!!! Ran out of gas? In May, lucky I was right by the WakeGirls dock and they had gas! Got in trouble? In May as well, big speeding fine, OUCH. Injured yourself? End of June, just a little tweak. Made a bet? Reno Casino last weekend at Nationals all on black – came out a WINNER! Flew on an Airplane? This week – Monday Wednesday Friday and Sunday Downloaded music? About a week ago Were surprised by a friend? Reno Nationals, Melissa bought me a present :) You asked yourself “what the heck am I doing here?” The first day I rocked up to Wakestock UK for Practice day, it was so windy, the conditions were unridable. I definitely asked myself “what the heck am I doing here” after traveling about 20 hours to get there.
